Drop Notes in the middle of Safari’s tile: the two windows trade places.

Spacetile watches the mouse through an event tap; the Accessibility permission covers it. Clicks pass straight through; Spacetile only does work once a press turns into a drag.

Focus follows mouse

Moving the pointer onto another window focuses it immediately. Turn it off in Settings → General.

  • No raising. The window under the pointer takes keyboard focus without being raised, so a floating window stays on top of the tile underneath. Typing goes to the hovered window, including in apps with several windows.
  • Untracked windows block it. Hovering a dialog or another window Spacetile doesn’t manage does nothing; the tile behind it isn’t focused through it.
  • Clicking and the keyboard still raise. Clicking a window, or focusing one with ⌥h/j/k/l, raises it as usual. With SIP on, a floating window can’t be lifted back above another app’s window afterwards.

Mouse follows focus

When you focus a window with the keyboard, the pointer jumps to its centre, unless it’s already inside. Turn it off in Settings → General.

Dragging a tiled window

Drag a tiled window by its title bar. A highlight shows where it will land, and releasing applies it.

Where you release Highlight Result
The middle half of another tile Orange, “Swap with App” The two windows trade places
Near an edge of another tile Blue, “Insert left of App” (or right, above, below) The window moves next to that tile, on that side
An empty tile (a hole) Green, “Fill empty tile” The window fills it and its old tile closes up
Its own tile, or empty desktop None The window snaps back

Resizing with the mouse

Drag the shared edge between two tiled windows. The neighbour follows once the pointer pauses (60ms), and again on release. You can grab the edge in the gap between the windows. Releasing moves the split under that edge, so the layout keeps the new size.

fn shortcuts

These swallow the click, so the app underneath never sees it:

Gesture What it does
fn + drag anywhere in a window Move it. Over a tile it shows the same highlights as a title-bar drag; release to swap or insert
fn + drag to the left or right screen edge Purple strip, “Send to Space N”. Releasing sends the window to the previous or next Desktop on its display (and follows, if set). Only outer edges count: an edge shared with another display is how a window crosses onto it
fn + right-drag, or fn + ⇧ + drag Resize from the nearest corner. The neighbours of a tiled window follow, and a floating window keeps its new size

Preselect hint

After preselect (⌥⇧⌃h/j/k/l), a teal highlight labelled “Next window goes here” marks the half of the tile the next new window will take. It disappears when a window takes the spot or you cancel it.
