Spacetile updates itself, and from version 1.0 it needs a Licence once a 14-day Trial ends. This page covers how the Trial works, how to buy and enter a Licence key, what your Licence’s update window means, and how to choose which updates you’re offered.
Spacetile is free until 1.0. Releases numbered below 1.0 (such as 0.2.0) have no Trial and need no Licence, and Settings → Licence says so. The 14-day Trial starts the first time you open version 1.0 or later.
The Trial
The Trial is the first 14 days of using Spacetile without a Licence. Every feature works during it. Settings → Licence shows how many days are left.
When the Trial ends:
- Tiling and profiles stop. Your windows stay where they are, and the Tiling switch in the menu-bar panel can’t be turned back on.
- Everything else keeps working. The menu-bar item, Settings, and buying and entering a key all still work.
- The menu-bar item shows ⚠︎. Its panel reads “Trial over: windows stay put until a Licence key is entered”, with Enter Licence key… and Buy a Licence… rows.
Deleting and reinstalling Spacetile doesn’t restart the Trial.
Buy a Licence
- Go to spacetile.app/buy, or click Buy a Licence… in Settings → Licence or in the menu-bar panel.
- Choose an option and pay at checkout:
| Option | Price | Updates included |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | £20, one-time | Every release in the 12 months after you buy |
| Lifetime supporter | £40, one-time | Every future release, with no Renewal ever needed |
| Renewal | £12, when you want it | Another 12 months of releases for an existing Licence |
Prices are in pounds sterling, with local taxes added at checkout; checkout can show the price in your own currency. Nothing is a subscription, and nothing charges you automatically.
A Licence is for one person, on every Mac they use: your own Macs and your work Mac alike. Don’t share your key with anyone else.
- Check your email. Your Licence key arrives from
licences@spacetile.appwith the subject “Your Spacetile Licence”. Keep that email.
Enter your Licence key
Use the link in the email (recommended), since it needs no copying:
- On the Mac where Spacetile is installed, open the email and click Activate Spacetile on this Mac.
- Spacetile opens and shows “Spacetile is licensed”, with your email address and the date your update window ends.
To paste the key instead:
- Open Settings → Licence.
- Paste the whole key from the email into Paste your Licence key.
- Click Activate.
Settings → Licence then shows Licensed to with your email address, and Update window ends with a date (“never (lifetime)” for Lifetime supporter). Tiling and profiles start again straight away.
Spacetile checks the key on your Mac and never sends it anywhere. It’s stored in your login keychain.
If the key isn’t accepted
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| That isn’t a valid Licence key. Copy the whole key from your Licence email. | The key was cut short or changed. Copy it again, or use the activation link instead |
| This Licence’s update window ended on date, before this version was released. Renew it to use this version. | Your Licence doesn’t cover this version. Renew, or install a release from inside your update window |
| This Licence has been revoked. | The Licence was refunded or withdrawn. Buy a new Licence, or email support@spacetile.app if you think this is a mistake |
| Couldn’t save the key to the keychain. | Your keychain refused the write. Unlock your login keychain in Keychain Access and try again |
A key that isn’t accepted never replaces the key you already have.
Lost your key?
Go to Find my Licence, enter the email address you bought with, and click Send my Licences. Every Licence for that address is emailed again, each with a fresh activation link. An address gets at most three of these emails a day; check your spam folder if nothing arrives.
Update windows
Your Licence’s update window is the 12 months after you buy or renew it. It decides which releases your key works with:
- Releases from inside the window work for good. The version you have never stops working because the window closed.
- Releases from after the window don’t accept the key. Spacetile’s updater won’t install one. It shows “Spacetile version is available: Renew to install” and offers Renew Licence… or Not Now.
- Lifetime supporter’s window never closes, so every release is covered.
When the window has ended, the updater still offers the newest release it does cover, if there’s one you don’t have yet.
If you install a newer release by hand (from the DMG, or with brew upgrade --greedy), tiling and profiles stop in that version. The panel then reads “Update window ended before this version: renew to use it”. Renew, or reinstall a version from inside your window.
Renew your Licence
A Renewal costs £12 and adds 12 months to your update window. It counts from the end of your current window, or from the day you pay if the window has already ended, so renewing early loses nothing.
- Open Settings → Licence and click Renew….
- Pay in the checkout that opens in your browser.
- Activate the new key from the “Your renewed Spacetile Licence” email, as you did the first one. It replaces your old key; Spacetile doesn’t pick it up on its own.
Refunds
You can have a full refund within 30 days of buying a Licence, Lifetime supporter or Renewal, for any reason. Email support@spacetile.app from the address you bought with. A refund revokes that Licence, so releases made after the refund won’t accept its key. See the Refund policy for the details.
Updates
Spacetile checks for updates once a day. When it finds one, it shows the release notes and asks before installing. Updates keep your Accessibility permission, settings and profiles.
To check now, click Check for Updates… in the menu-bar panel, or in Settings → General → Updates. The same section shows your Version.
Choose a Channel
Settings → General → Updates → Channel picks which releases you’re offered:
| Channel | You’re offered |
|---|---|
| Stable (default, recommended) | Finished releases only |
| Beta | Test versions of the next release, plus Stable releases, so you never fall behind Stable |
| Nightly | A build of the latest code, made each day it changes, plus Betas and Stable releases |
Every Channel’s builds are signed and notarized like Stable ones. A new Channel applies from the next check. Switching back to Stable stops test versions from being offered, but one you’ve already installed stays until a newer Stable release replaces it. Your Licence’s update window applies on every Channel.
Betas are also listed as pre-releases on GitHub.
Homebrew
If you installed with Homebrew, Spacetile still updates itself, so brew upgrade skips it unless you pass --greedy. Homebrew only installs Stable releases; to follow Beta or Nightly, change the Channel in Settings.
brew uninstall --zap --cask spacetile also deletes your settings and profiles (~/.config/spacetile) and Spacetile’s preferences. It leaves your Licence key and Trial in the keychain.
